Plastic Surgery Addiction
Could You Be a Plastic Surgery Junkie?
Plastic surgery can not only improve your appearance – it can also have emotional and psychological benefits such as increased happiness, self-esteem, and self-confidence. A lot of people undergo more than one plastic surgery procedure, but how much is too much?
To some degree, we are all self conscious and insecure, and a cosmetic procedure may just be the thing we need to increase our self-confidence or make us feel better about ourselves. For others, no matter how many surgeries they undergo, they still aren’t happy with their appearance. This is due to a condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is a negative preoccupation with physical appearance. People with this condition can be extremely attractive, yet still see themselves as ugly.
Signs of BDD may include:
- Obsessive grooming rituals
- Examining and picking of the skin
- Continuously checking your reflection
- Avoiding social gatherings due to feelings of ugliness
- Undergoing multiple plastic surgery procedures
BDD leading to plastic surgery addiction is a serious disorder and will not go away on its own. If you or someone you know has an addiction to plastic surgery, please seek counseling. Your board certified plastic surgeon may be able to provide you with a referrel.
